Online Banking Security
Online banking is a convenient way to access or conduct transactions on your account. It is your responsibility to take the appropriate precautions to protect your own data, including information that can be used to fraudulently access or conduct transactions on your account. We've listed some tips below:
For any computer you use for online banking, shopping or similar activities:
- Maintain active, up-to-date antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall protection. If your antivirus program indicates a virus found that cannot be removed, contact a computer repair specialist to have the virus removed.
- Install operating system and software updates (i.e. “patches”, “service packs”) as soon as possible.
- Use strong passwords that contain:
- alpha/numeric characters and symbols
- upper and lower case characters
- minimum of 8 characters but longer is recommended
- use special characters (for example: #$-!%^&*)
- no words or names that can be found in a dictionary
- Change your password regularly.
- Don't use the same ID and PIN/password for every online account you have.
- Never share your password or login information with anyone.
- Never bank or shop online using computers at kiosks, cafes, unsecured computers or unsecured (public) wireless networks.
- When exiting an online banking session, always use the log out function and close the browser window.
- For the ultimate in protecting your financial data, computer security experts recommend that you create a separate user profile on your computer that is only used for purchases and financial transactions and is not used for any internet browsing. Better yet, purchase a dedicated computer or tablet that is used only for financial and online purchases. Protect this dedicated computer by not using it to browse the internet and by not allowing any downloads.

Avoiding Phishing, Spyware, Malware
- Never open email from unknown sources.
- Never respond to a suspicious email or click on attachments or hyperlinks.
- Be very cautious of emails asking for personal or account information. Fraudulent and phishing emails often appear to be from a family member, friend or even your financial institution. White Sands FCU does not send emails asking for personal or account information.
- Install a firewall, preferably both software and hardware, to protect your computer. More information on firewalls can be found here.
- Pay close attention to the URL (internet address) behind the link. Often in phishing attempts, if you place the cursor over the link the fraudsters want you to click on, it has nothing to do with the actual company they claim to be.
White Sands FCU has implemented the following security measures:
- White Sands FCU’s website is a secure site. Look for the padlock and also notice that the URL address will start with https://. A site without a padlock or a URL starting with http:// is not secure.
- White Sands FCU requires an 8 character alpha-numeric password.
- White Sands FCU uses watermarks or personal images to help you identify you are logging into your actual Online Banking account.
- White Sands FCU also has security challenge questions which may be prompted at any time to help identify who is actually logging in.
You are ultimately responsible for protecting your user ID’s and passwords and to perform periodic checks of your computer systems for these types of vulnerabilities. If your user ID’s and passwords are compromised, you may be at risk for a financial loss.
